The resolution of your source PNG significantly affects the quality of the SVG conversion. Higher resolution PNGs produce more accurate, cleaner vector output. Here's what you need to know.
How Resolution Affects Tracing
Vector tracing algorithms work by analyzing pixel boundaries. More pixels = more data for the algorithm = more accurate contour detection. A 100×100 pixel logo produces jagged, rough paths. The same logo at 1000×1000 pixels produces smooth, accurate paths.
Minimum Recommended Resolutions
- Simple logos (1-3 colors): 500×500 pixels minimum
- Complex logos/illustrations: 1000×1000+ pixels
- Icons: 256×256 pixels minimum (512+ preferred)
- Detailed clipart: 1500×1500+ pixels
Finding Higher Resolution Versions
Check original design files, brand asset folders, company websites (right-click → Open Image in New Tab to see full resolution), or ask the original designer. Google Image Search's "Search by image" can sometimes find higher-resolution versions online.
What If You Only Have Low Resolution?
If your source PNG is very small, the automated conversion will produce rough edges. Options: upscale with an AI upscaler first, or manually redraw in a vector editor. For most cases, even a medium-resolution PNG gives acceptable results with Shape to Vector's converter.
