A practical guide on png to svg for sublimation printing — when, why, and how.
Sublimation printing transfers ink onto materials like mugs, phone cases, and fabric using heat. While sublimation uses raster images for printing, SVG is valuable for creating crisp designs and precise cut lines.
SVG's Role in Sublimation
The sublimation print itself uses a high-resolution PNG or JPEG. However, SVG is needed for the cut template — defining the exact shape to cut the sublimation blank or the outline for a shaped product.
Workflow
- Create your design or convert your PNG to SVG
- Use the SVG for the cut outline/template
- Export a high-resolution PNG (300 DPI) for the sublimation print
- Print, cut, heat press
Tips
- Design in SVG first, export PNG for printing — not the other way around
- Add bleed (2-3mm beyond the cut line) to prevent white edges
- Use CMYK color profiles for accurate print color reproduction
